ACHA Announces 2021 Board of Regents

Overland Park, Kansas—The American College of Healthcare Architects has announced the election of Angela Mazzi, FAIA, FACHA, as the 2021 President of the Board of Regents. Angela assumes this role as of January 1, 2021, and succeeds 2020 President Vince Avallone, AIA, ACHA. Angela has been a member of the Board of Regents since her election in 2016 and has served the College in many capacities primarily focusing on education, awards and relationships with external healthcare professional organizations.

Angela is currently a Senior Medical Planner and Associate Principal at GBBN Architects in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her work focuses on enhancing quality of life through built environments—connecting great design with user needs. She implements evidence-based design and Lean principles to bring empathy to healthcare design projects around the nation. Angela’s research on salutogenesis provides perspective on how the built environment shapes user experience and outcomes and her research into clinical workspace is helping to change the dynamic of how the needs of healthcare staff can be addressed to prevent burnout, errors or injuries. Angela has been invited to speak nationally and internationally, write articles, teach classes and participate on juries because of her deep healthcare experience and research in human behavior.

Angela has been actively involved in ACHA, serving as Chair of the Education Committee from 2011–15 and as 2015 Chair of the Legacy Project Award before joining the Board of Regents in 2016. Angela also serves on the Summer Leadership Summit planning committee, the AIA Cincinnati Board, and was an Advisory Board member for Arizona State University’s Healthcare Design Program in its initial years. Her research linking wellness to design has been published in many healthcare journals and presented at national and international conferences. She is a peer reviewer for Health Environment Research and Design (HERD) Journal and Academy of Architecture for Health Journal.

Steve Templet, AIA, ACHA, of Sizeler Thompson Brown Architects has been named 2021 President-Elect of the Board of Regents. In addition, Dan Delk, AIA, ACHA, and Ann Adams, AIA, ACHA, have joined the Board of Regents.

The American College of Healthcare Architects was created in 1999 to offer Board Certification to licensed healthcare architects through an independent process involving a portfolio review, an assessment by peer architects, and a rigorous examination. It is the first and only design specialty so recognized by the AIA, and it is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2020.
