Recommended Standards for Newborn ICU Design

The first edition of the Recommended Standards for Newborn ICU Design was published in January 1992. Since that time, the document has been regularly updated by a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, state health planning officials, consultants, and architects. The Consensus Committee on Recommended Design Standards for Advanced Neonatal Care released the ninth edition of the Recommended Standards after their Ninth Consensus Conference on Newborn ICU Design in March 2019.

Portions of the Recommended Standards have been incorporated into the FGI Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospitals, the American Academy of Pediatrics/American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ Guidelines for Perinatal Care, and standards documents in several other countries.

Note: The file posted by FGI has been reformatted and the references updated. The University of Notre Dame has posted the recommendations online for years and will continue to do so. As well, the Journal of Perinatology published the 8th edition in its pages and will include an article on the substantive changes from the 8th edition to the 9th in fall 2020.
